Tools

I work for an employer but use my own tools, am I covered?

If you own it, you insure it. It’s that simple! Not all employers will have sufficient cover to keep you protected. Our tool cover will have you sorted within 48 hours if they get damaged, lost or stolen. If your tools are under 10 years old, you’ll get a spanking new replacement and if they’re older, you’ll get a cash amount.

Vehicles

My own car got smashed on my way to the job, am I covered under my employer?

If you use your own vehicle for work and your employer is insured with Cactus, we’ll have your back for work trips….just don’t assume they’ve got insurance. If you’re unsure, give us a call and we’ll sort you out.

My tools got nicked out the back of the van, is this covered in my vehicle insurance?

Sorry mate, you’re **** outta luck, you’ll need separate tool insurance for that. For just a $1 a day, we can cover you for up to $5k of tools. Cheap as bro!

Liability

I know that my employer has insurance, what’s my liability?

Do they? If you’re are a 100% sure your employer has liability cover, you are protected on site for any property damage or bodily injury. Any work you undertake on the side, you’ll need separate cover for.

PI

I have an LBP license, do I still need insurance?

If you’re signing off work, you’re responsible. As well as suspending or losing your licence, you can be personally fined up to $20k. Not worth it bro! We can tailor a special cover for LBPs to include the extra cover you need as someone who takes the responsibility. You should ask your employer to front up for these costs too!

Apprentice

I’ve just started out. Do I need insurance or will my employer sort me out?

Don’t assume your employer has insurance, or the right cover to keep you protected. Ask what insurance is in place and give us a call to check the details stack up. It’s not worth getting on site for a dodgy boss and getting screwed over.

Tools

I’ve only got a few tools, is insurance even worth it?

If your tools got stolen tonight, could you afford to miss work or replace them? For less than a $1 a day, we can cover up to $5k of tools and have you sorted within 48 hours. If your tools are under 10 years old, you’ll get a spanking new replacement, and if they’re older, you’ll get a cash amount.

My car’s already cactus, and I use the one at work; why would I need insurance?

Can you afford to replace a new Beamer? If you smash a car, you’re legally responsible for the cost of the repairs. Our liability cover will sort you out for any third party damages. Phew!

My car is already insured, does this protect me when i’m at work?

If your car is used for business purposes, it will not be covered under your normal road insurance.

My current employer wants me to use the work van for all trips. Do I need separate insurance?

Your current employer’s Vehicle Insurance should cover you for all accidents and damages when the vehicles being used for work purposes, assuming you’ve got a valid license.

Liability

What’s Liability Cover and do I need it?

If you drop a spanner on someone’s head or smash an antique when moving furniture, you might find yourself cactus! If your employer’s not fully insured, any bodily or property damage you cause, you could be responsible for. That could be a couple of year’s wages! Even if your employer has full cover, you are only protected when working for them. Any jobs on the side, you’ll need your own cover for.

I just cut through the only fuel pipe to Auckland airport, am I responsible?

You’re new, mistakes happen! Your employer should have your back with their full cover when you are working for them.

Subcontractor

I’m a tradie, what insurance do I need and is it worth it?

Tradies generally need Tool, Vehicle, and Liability cover. All our products are modular so you won’t be paying for what you don’t need. Is it worth it? Well, can you afford to replace your tools if they get nicked, or the court fees and penalties for defective workmanship?

I’ve done this for years with no sweat, why would I need insurance now?

Lucky you! With the number of claims we get, not everyone seems so fortunate. As a subbie, you take all the responsibility on your own shoulders, so it’s not even worth the risk.

What policies do I need?

As you are personally responsible when you’re on the job, you need to ensure you’re fully protected. As well as Vehicle and Tool cover, you’ll need Public and Statutory Liability and Professional Indemnity, and maybe even LBP. If you’re unsure, give us a ring and we’ll make sure you stay risk free while only paying for what you need.

Tools

My tools got pinched on my first day on the job. How long will it take to replace them?

We don’t want you to miss your livelihood so we’ll have you back to work with everything you need in 24 – 48 hours. You’ve probably got some pretty sweet **** in there too. That’s why all gear under ten years old will be replaced with a brand spanky new set.

Vehicle

Not necessarily my friend. As you’re hired on a contract basis, you are only protected under their Liability cover when directly working on their work site. If you’re carrying out any jobs on the side, you’ll need your own cover.

I’ve got Statutory Liability, why do I need Public Liability too?

If you hit a gas pipe on the job, you’re paying. Public Liability will protect you from personal injury or property damage.

I’ve got an apprentice working under me. Am I responsible for them?

If the apprentice or any employee working under you is hired by the employer, you are not responsible and they will be protected under the employer’s liability. If you’ve hired them, you are responsible and will need Employer’s Liability Insurance. Any doubt, get in contact – it’s better to be sure.

PI

I’m not signing off work but i’m still providing warranties. How can I make sure my a** is covered?

Even if your employer has Professional Indemnity cover, you’re not free from risk. You can be held liable for defective workmanship if your name is on the warranty. Give us a call and we’ll tell you exactly what you need without the bull.

Business Owner

Are all the liability covers the same? What do I need and is it worth it?

As a business owner and employer of staff, you’ll need Public, Statutory and Employer’s Liability. We’ll sort you out for all three under one cover to that’s one less thing to worry about. Is it worth it? Well, can you afford to replace your tools if they get nicked, or the court fees and penalties for defective workmanship?

What about when subbies are on site?

If you have a subbie working on a few different sites, make sure they have their own cover before they step foot on yours.

Vehicle

Are my subbies and apprentices covered on my vehicle policy?

Yes, as long as it is being used for work purposes and they have a valid license.

Do I need vehicle insurance if my apprentice has his own?

If an apprentice is out and about in your vehicle and they have an accident, you could be liable. If they are using their own vehicle for work, they will not be covered. You will need Vehicle Insurance for all work vehicles to make sure you and your staff stay protected.

Tools

One lad had $2000 worth of tools stolen on my site. Am I responsible?

You’re not responsible, but if they don’t have personal insurance, they could be out of work for a while. Our material damage (tool) cover, even covers employees gear for up $5000 and will see them back to the job with 48 hours. Too easy!

Liability

I’m thinking of starting my own business, how can I make sure I my a** is covered?

Good on ya mate! The best thing to do is give us a call for a chat as it will all depend on a number of things including any planned staff, value of assets and the risk of your business.

A subby hurts themselves on my site. Is it my fault or theirs?

Regardless of who’s at fault, you’re responsible and Health and Safety and Worksafe can fine you substantially. Our Public, Statutory and Employer’s Liability (alongside your Health and Safety provider) will support you through the process.

I currently work for myself, but am thinking of getting an apprentice. Do I need to extend my cover?

As long as they are working under you, you do not need to extend your Public or Statutory Liability, but you will need to get Employer’s Liability and may need to extend you tool cover too.

Do I need Contract Works Insurance for a new build?

Yes! It is your obligation to sort this out if you’re building a new property.

What about when we’re extending a house?

Under the Constructions Act, it’s the owner’s obligation to initiate a Contract Works for renovations. It is crucial that this is done through a proper adviser as it must be in conjunction with their current home insurance policy to be valid.

We just finished a job for local school and they’re threatening to take us to court over damage to their plumbing system. Where do we stand?

If the work has been signed off, the LBP will be responsible. With PI cover, any legal costs and expenses associated with defending yourself against legal action are covered.
