Keep your tools safe

Spike

As a tradie, tools are one of your most valuable assets. Having them stolen would not only be an expensive cost to shoulder, but it may also impact your ability to work. Unfortunately, tools are a top target for theft in New Zealand and it’s on the rise. If you’d be lost without your tools, we’ve put together some tips to keep your tools safe.

Keep an inventory

Make sure you have a detailed inventory of all of your hand and powered tools. Create a spreadsheet with the place, date and proof of purchase, serial numbers and value of the item. Taking photos of your tools is a good idea too. Our mates at Hoist have a great app for this!

Mark your stuff

You should be marking your tools with your licence plate number or other number that’s relevant to you. Giving the tools a unique mark will help the police identify you as the owner if they are able to recover them. This also deters thieves as it decreases the resell value and increases the risk of being caught.

Lock up

This may seem like an obvious one, but investing in some good, secure locks will make thieves think twice as it will take too much time to get to your tools. Technology is pretty advanced nowadays and you can even get an alarm system that alerts your phone when someone is trying to break in.

Get insured

You can do all you can to prevent your tools from being nicked, but ultimately, having your tools insured is the most important thing you can do. It can be a massive inconvenience getting your tools stolen so getting insured means you can get back to work as quickly as possible.
